Across time, cultures, and continents, there is this one game that people loved playing when they were kids, and still love doing even as they grow into maturity: playing make believe. When we were young, we were royals, secret agents, parents, fairies, monsters… anything that we wanted to be, really. As adults, we dive deep into our imagination and picture ourselves living in another time, another city, or even another world. More so, we imagine living out our ideal life, being our best self, living inside an ideal world. No matter how old you are, where you come from, or what you do for a living, playing make believe is still a great way to just escape for a while and take on a higher perspective. 

We just can’t help but dream and imagine, and this is so that we can make our world a better place. We are designed to dream and to make them a reality, but we are also given little opportunities throughout our days to make some of them come true. When we write stories, paint, make videos, plan our future, or create solutions — whenever and wherever there is an outpouring of creativity, that’s when our dreams take their place in the real world. And, maybe, this is how we play make believe as adults.

Thanks to creativity, we don’t have to be stuck just wondering what it’s like to live in another time or place. We are actually able to visit other points in time, like movies that are made or photos that are taken in the 21st century but set in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. We can, for a few moments, visit cities or countries that are far away, like when we’re reading a book about Paris or listening to songs about the fabulous New York. Thanks to creativity, we can witness our dreams coming true in these little moments of our daily lives.

And, to make these dreams come true, the basic, most fundamental thing we can start with is this: a blank canvas. A blank piece of paper, an empty photo studio, a blank music sheet, a problem that needs solving. From there onwards, there is nothing but endless possibilities waiting for you to discover — endless opportunities for you to live out, for a moment, the life you have always dreamt of; a pathway for you to live your life to the fullest.
