When was the last time you embarked on a risky adventure? Risky adventures are marked by uncertainties. We are often unsure of which path to take, which direction to go, or what awaits us at the destination. If all of those were certain, it wouldn’t be an adventure, would it?
Adventure attracts growth, because growth happens outside of our comfort zone. Within our safe zone, there is no urgency for us to be stretched. Growth, especially of the heart, is uncomfortable, because it requires stretching and enlarging. But the good news is, in the midst of all that stretching, strengthening, and enlarging, there is a promise of growth.
You know that you’ve grown when you come to know what to release and what to steward. When we were younger, there is an excitement in us to try and explore everything. But, as we get older, we realise that our energy is limited — that we, too, are fully human. As we grow older, we realise that we need to pick what we decide to explore. We need to pick what battles we choose to fight, and release all the other battles which are not ours to fight. We are more sensitive toward what matters.
In our relationships, growth looks like knowing what to release and what to steward. To steward is to take responsibility, meaning that we are called to fulfill our responsibilities as husbands or wives. To release is to trust that we both have no intention to hurt, and want the best for each other.
Embarking on an adventure is not always easy, let alone embarking on it with another person. You will surely stumble upon disagreements along the way, arguments that are difficult and unsettling. But, on the other side of hardships is always growth — growth to become more mature, more responsible, and more trusting. So, just go on the adventure, step out of your comfort zone, and watch as your hearts grow bigger each step of the way.
